About the Neighborhood Association

The Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association (HONNA) was organized and incorporated in 1974, and is one of the oldest and most vibrant neighborhood associations in St. Petersburg.

"The mission of Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association is to promote, preserve, and protect quality of life in our unique corner of the world. "

The full HONNA Mission and Priorities statement can be read below.

"HONNA" is pronounced hon'-a or hon'-? and has a long "o" sound.

History of the Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association (HONNA)

The Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association (HONNA) was founded in 1974 as the North Shore Neighborhood Association (NSNA).  A name change occurred in May 2002 to reflect the prevailing use of the name "Old Northeast" when referring to the neighborhood.

HONNA was the first neighborhood association to participate in the City of St. Peterburg's Neighborhood Planning Program and to complete the first neighborhood plan developed by the City of St. Petersburg. Through this program, HONNA developed and adopted many first-time programs such as Neighborhood Redevelopment District (NRD), Neighborhood Design Review (NDR) guidelines, etc. The neighborhood plan for the Old Northeast Shore won an award of excellence from the Suncoast Section of the American Planning Association for neighborhood planning in 1990.  HONNA also achieved National Historic District status for the neighborhood, and received many commendations for the scope of the effort as it was achieved almost entirely with volunteer effort.

HONNA volunteers organize a variety of events year round.  The Neighborhood Events web page lists the major events organized by HONNA for the neighborhood's benefit.  Other activities and projects are organized by various HONNA Committees, including the award-winning and popular neighborhood newsletter.

The best known HONNA events are the the Spring Garden tour (usually held in May), and the Holiday Home Tour (December). These tours include a variety of homes and exemplify the architectural diversity in our neighborhood.  Proceeds from both events are donated to local charities.

HONNA is a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization. Board and neighborhood membership meetings are held nearly every month to review current business. Most new issues and ongoing activities are addressed and fulfilled by HONNA committees. Some committees meet regularly and some meet as needed.

HONNA membership is available to anyone. Members who are residents of the neighborhood have voting privileges on HONNA matters brought before the general membership.

Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association:
Mission and Priorities

The mission of Historic Old Northeast Neighborhood Association is to promote, preserve, and protect quality of life in our unique corner of the world.

We bring energy, action, and structure to the projects and initiatives of members, and we originate projects and initiatives that further that mission.

• Education first—we are facilitators of communication, information, and education as a means to balanced and cooperative resolutions.

• We are committed to outreach as a means of bringing understanding and awareness of the value of community.

• We research and publish to achieve a thorough dialogue.

• We seek to engender a diverse supportive community and to maintain the architectural and infrastructural features within the community that foster friendships, interactivity and a support system.

These are our priorities:

Advancement: In order to advance our mission and to increase our value to the community, we actively seek to attract resources by hosting events that educate members of the community and other communities, build partnerships with individuals and organizations supportive of our mission, and increase our visibility and authority as a leader in the community of interest. Events and activities include social gatherings that encourage friendships and relationships to form, educational seminars, guided historic home and garden tours, recycling of household goods through garage sales and the like, and community service events such as waterfront cleanup.

Communication: We publish information to support our mission, our vision, our values, our priorities, and our ambitions, to engender dialogue, call attention to important matters, and to celebrate our community. The purpose of all of our communication is the education of our constituents; we communicate in as many ways as we can in order to reach them. All communication is respectful of diversity.

Crime Prevention: We live in a safe neighborhood and we intend to keep it that way.

Historic Preservation: Historic Old Northeast is on the National Register of Historic Places, an honor and responsibility. This designation adds to the value of our property, and establishes the imperative to protect the assets that make both the designation and the neighborhood possible.

Membership: As neighbors and leaders, we serve the neighborhood, and we rely on membership to build our resources and inform our initiatives. Increasing membership increases our ability to serve the neighborhood.

Planning: As residents, we experience the net results of our planning activities each and every day. The planning activities of our community take place in the context of municipal, countywide, statewide, and national planning activities and legal structures. We ensure that our neighborhood voices are heard and that our communities continue to be able to contribute to the larger communities of which we are apart.

Traffic: Ours is pedestrian friendly neighborhood. Our safety and quality of life depend on our ability to explore, gather, and use our streets, avenues, sidewalks, parks, alleys, and yards for the purpose of making and sustaining friendships and connections.
