Emergency Pet Care & Animal Shelters

Tampa Bay Veterinary Emergency Service:  (727) 531-5752
Animal Emergency Clinic:  (727) 323-1311
National Animal Poison Center:  1-888-426-4435

If you have found a pet, please contact an animal shelter. Please keep in mind that the shelter may not respond at night or on weekends.

If you have lost a pet, here are tips culled from animal shelter websites:

  • As you look for your pet, have your pet’s license number, a current photo and any other information handy
  • Walk, ride a bike, or drive around the neighborhood, particularly at dawn and dusk.
  • If you create a flyer, print it on brightly colored paper to increase visibility.
  • Ask neighbors and neighborhood kids, letter carriers and delivery people if they have seen your pet. Give them a copy of your flyer.
  • Your pet may be scared, so be sure to carefully check potential hiding places, such as under bushes and around storage sheds.
  • If you know of any other pet owners check with them, your pet may go there to socialize.
  • If there are any nearby houses undergoing construction or rehabilitation, check with the workers if they have seen your pet
  • Contact animal shelters.
  • Pinellas County Animal Services provides lost and found services to the public.
  • Visit the CARES (County Animal Rescue & Entry System) website to post your lost pet’s description and photo.
  • Post a notice on Craigslist Lost and Found.
  • You may also post your lost pet on petfinder.com, pets911.com, and petharbor.com.
  • Check the classifieds. The St. Petersburg Times prints found pet ads for free.
  • Don't give up your search. Update your lost reports periodically with the shelters and online. Some animals have been reunited with their families months later!

Be careful of pet-recovery scams. When talking to a stranger who claims to have found your pet, ask to describe the pet thoroughly before you offer any information. Be especially wary of anyone who asks you to send or wire money before returning the pet.

Pets have a much better chance of making it back home if they always wear a collar and an ID tag with your address and telephone number, and have a microchip or other form of permanent identification. The Humane Society of Pinellas offers low-cost microchip clinics several times per year.

Best of luck in your search.
